USB Power for External Cameras

Because I always try to be as unique as I can with my shots, I like using Chassis mounted GoPro’s whenever possible. However, I was finding that battery life was an issue. Especially on a winter wheeling adventure.

I solved this issue by purchasing a MOTOPOWER (MP0609EA) 3.1 Amp Waterproof Motorcycle Dual USB Charger Kit!

With a 16 foot USB cable I was able to run a line to the back bumper. This allows me to have a camera either facing rearward for a great chase cam, or facin forward for a cool rear axle shot. I also have an option 6 foot cable available mid-chassis for mounting a camera on the evap cannister for a great forward/rearward middle chassis view.

This ensures that my Hero cameras are aways ready and fully charged. As far as recording goes, I use the iPhone app to start/stop recording from inside the cab using the BlueTooth connection. It works quite reliably. Every now and again one of my GoPro’s does act up, and requires a hard reboot (removal and reinsertion of the battery).

The only negative here is the fact that I had to replace the battery door with a more open design. This does take some of the water proof nature away from the cameras. But it’s a work in progress and I’m still experimenting; so far though the shots have been really good.
